Joe Zazzera of Plant Solutions Shares His Perspective in a Nurtio Interview

In a recent in-depth interview with Nurtio, Joe Zazzera of Plant Solutions sat down to discuss the future of biophilic design, the impact of smart plant technology, and how his team is evolving to meet record-high demand for nature-rich commercial environments. The conversation highlights Joe’s visionary approach while shedding light on the growth of Plant Solutions and its adoption of Nurtio’s monitoring tools.

About Joe Zazzera and Plant Solutions

During the interview, Joe Zazzera shared the story of Plant Solutions, the Scottsdale-based company he founded in 1981. What began as a traditional plant-design service for commercial buildings has grown into a full botanical design firm offering living walls, custom interior landscapes, patio design, residential services, holiday décor, and the company’s signature MossWallArt™ installations.

Joe emphasized that technology has become a core driver of their expansion, allowing Plant Solutions to support larger and more complex nature-integration projects across many industries.

Biophilic Design Demand Highlighted by Joe Zazzera

One of the main points Joe stressed in the Nurtio interview was the challenge of demand in the interior-landscape industry, especially as demand continues to surge. He stated:

“In my 42 years in the industry, I have never seen such high demand and desire for building occupants to be surrounded by nature.”

He noted that clients now want more than decorative plants—they expect immersive, biophilic environments that support wellness, productivity, and aesthetic appeal.

Early Adoption of Nurtio’s Smart Plant-Monitoring Technology

As one of the earliest U.S. adopters of Nurtio Protect, Joe Zazzera expressed enthusiasm for the technology’s potential. He explained:

“I was excited to try out the product and see where the technology could take us. With the Nurtio system, I monitor the moisture levels of most of our living walls. Although we are not yet using it in every wall, most of our new walls are including this technology.”

Joe also described Plant Solutions’ experience during the product’s early rollout:

“I have always been an early adopter. I am pretty used to growing and changing as products evolve and change. There were some App issues in the beginning and a few sensors were buggy, but Nurtio took care of the issues very quickly and have been very honest and communicative with changes and updates. They often reach out for feedback and ways to improve the product.”

He highlighted two practical examples where the system helped Plant Solutions solve problems before they escalated. These included diagnosing moisture inconsistencies in living walls and identifying lighting issues caused by automated blinds—proving the value of data-driven monitoring.

Joe Zazzera’s Vision for the Future of Biophilic Design

Joe also spoke passionately about the deeper human need behind biophilic spaces. When asked about the industry’s direction, he said:

“Biophilia is our innate need to connect with other living things … I believe it will not be bred out of who we are.”

In Joe’s view, technology like Nurtio’s will be essential in scaling these nature-driven environments—ensuring plant health, improving longevity, and providing transparency and measurable value to clients.

Why Plant Solutions Embraces Smart Plant Systems

The interview made it clear why Plant Solutions continues to expand its use of smart-monitoring tools:

  • They enable proactive care instead of reactive troubleshooting.
  • They provide measurable results and data visibility for clients.
  • They ensure healthier, more resilient plant installations.
  • They help meet the rising demand for nature-integrated commercial interiors.

Under Joe Zazzera’s leadership, the company is positioned as a forward-thinking provider combining horticultural expertise with technological innovation.

Through his interview with Nurtio, Joe Zazzera shared a compelling vision for the future of interior landscaping. His insights reveal that the combination of smart monitoring, biophilic design, and expert horticulture is not just a trend—it is the foundation of modern built-environment wellness.
